2018. That was a beautiful year.
I managed to cram in a very emotional but excitable studio-life move in the depths of winter, during the end of a heavy dose of FLU. My fluff-ball, ginger, four-legged companion, sadly said his final “Woof” Goodnight (Love you, Woody <3). A sprinkling of heartache, a friendship outgrown, a phone pinched from my pocket whilst listening to music- without backed up pictures (Sad face, but it’s ok). A lesson learnt when “no-show’s” peaked and left me wondering if I’m cut out to be my own boss…
Make way for the Highlights!
In The Studio
Scratch Magazine UK featured me as their “Salon in the Spotlight”
Talking nails, starting out in Berlin and studio style. Fast forward a couple of months, SLEEK Mag came to visit me in my new spot (Full post here). Add another interview or two for various websites and it would appear that features on Effy Nails were like buses in 2018!
A surprise visit from Lily Allen
She booked in while in Berlin, during her No Shame tour! She opted for black Shellac with negative space half moons and a holographic foil on top, if you’re wondering. I forgot how much I liked her vibe and what she stands for until after our nail session, then I remembered! I didn’t do face to face “fan-girling” but afterwards, I was pretty excited and told everyone that would listen.
Lotic’s Embellished Nails
I first had the pleasure of doing Lotic’s nail’s on set for the cover of their album, “Power”, which came out August 2018. This time though, they chose to come to my private Neukölln studio and have their nails did while giving a full feature interview (front cover, no less) to Mixmag Magazine. No pressure. Congratulations, Lotic!
My nail studio was voted “Top rated” on Treatwell, second year a row. Thanks, you gggguuuuyyyyssss!
I finally added Planet Effy on my website, for all to see. A big moment for me as I was doing this in the background, a side hustle, if you will! Drawing is a hobby of mine and it feels so good to combine these two worlds together. I printed issues 1 and 2 of my comic zine, “Must Be The Pheromones”, my 2019 calendar “365 Days of Smile Love” and booked myself a pop-up space at Berlin Zine Fest.
After a full-blown, scorcher of a summer, I joined Everpress. A small, independent company who take on designs from “real artists” for “real people”. I decided to print a favourite hand illustration onto a Tee and raise money for The Ocean Clean Up project at the same time.
Only the amount purchased within a selected time-frame are printed, cutting out waste and making it easier than ever to print and then post worldwide. Thank you to everyone that purchased a Tee… we raised €128 in November 2018!
On The Road
Every now and again, when I’m not in the studio, I’m on a set somewhere in Berlin. People ask me, “What do you do on set?” Well, models need their nails did too! A favourite of mine was for Nike, back in June. Their Autumn/Winter look book was a mixture of neutrals, pinks, block primary colours and deep burgundy. Their Amsterdam based team along with models flying from the US and UK were the friendliest and chill bunch of pro’s on set ever!
